I teach Off Campus Education including Green Certificate, Registered Apprenticeship Program and Work Place Learning. As well I teach Grade 9 Construction Technologies at George McDougall High School

Hello, my name is Ken Melton and it has been my pleasure to have taught at George McDougall High School for the past 8 years. Did you know that there are several ways that students can earn high school credits outside of their regular timetables? Those students who have part time jobs can start completing grade 12 level credits for their work through Work Place Learning. Enrollment is easy and can start anytime. Full time summer jobs can count as well. These credits go towards their graduation requirements and are calculated in their GPA towards post-secondary applications. Those students who are interested in the trades can also explore opportunities in the Registered Apprenticeship Program. Their are 40 high school credits for those students who are working with a journeyman in one of the many trades within Alberta.

Lastly through Olds College students who are involved in one of the following areas can complete a total of 16 high school credits through the Green Certificate Program.

  • Cow/Calf
  • Equine
  • Field/Crop
  • Sheep
  • Bee Keeping
  • Feedlot

I believe that the skills and attributes gained through the above programs are incredibly important in the development of todays youth. These skills and attributes will serve them well in whatever their future endeavours are. My role as an educator is to help them facillitate and satisfy the program requirements. As it is an optional program the student committment is very important for success. Many of our students have gone on to have great success in the trades as well as enrollment in academic programs and scholarship applications.
