I teach English Language Arts 10, 20 and 30 at George McDougall High School

Hello and welcome to my page! I teach English Language Arts and have been teaching here at GMHS for four years. I have experience teaching all senior high levels. I attended Mount Royal University and obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in English and a minor in psychology. Afterwards, I attended the University of Calgary for my Bachelor of Education, with a Secondary English Language Arts background. I also have a variety of experiences working with youth on a personal and academic level. In my spare time, I enjoy music, playing Ultimate Frisbee, and reading.

Who am I?

I am a proud daughter, loving sister, friend, partner and dedicated teacher.

Where am I from?

I am from Calgary, AB and much of my societal identity is influenced by the art and culture that the city of Calgary has to offer. Also, because I come from a blended family, I come from a space of open-mindedness and empathy.

Where am I going?

As our world consistantly changes, I am constantly working on developing a growth mindset and forward thinking of how to better engage myself and students into the direction best fit for their goals and aspirations. I am always looking for ways to learn and enhance my understandings of the complexities of our world through literature, discussions with a variety of people and experiences. My goal is to leave myself and others better than where we started.

What are my responsibilities?

As an educator, I have an obvious responsibility of ensuring students understand the curriculum. However, I think it is even more important to ensure students are safe, comfortable and confident in their ability to grow and succeed. It is part of my job to make sure students are kind and caring to their environment and world. I also have responsibilities to take care of myself and my family.

I believe students will be most engaged and learn the most effectively if they are at the center of their own learning. I believe all students have the right to learn and should engage in their strengths and challenge themselves in their weaknesses. It is important for students to recognize their strengths and weaknesses as they venture through the “real world” so that students are constantly learning about their environment, but also themselves. I am a strong advocate for self-growth and challenge, so it is my promise to plant these seeds in the students’ minds and help them succeed and grow into contributing members of society.

We will be studying a variety of texts of different genres, and creating connections between self and literature. Creating relationships and connections between text and self is important in the depth of understanding for students since literature is used to communicate further ideas.

I have high standards for my students, and I will always try to push students to be their best version of themselves. It is my job to teach my students and make sure they are learning, but the truth is, I will be learning so much from them as well.
