Academic Upgrading After Graduation

There are a few options for upgrading high school courses depending on your age as of September 1 at the beginning of the school year.

Were you under 20 years of age on Sept 1, 202X (first day of the school year)? If you were under 20, you qualify for Free High School Upgrading. You can register with Vista Virtual High School or the Airdrie Community Learning Center free of charge. There is also St. Anne Academic Centre in Calgary. Contact those schools for more information.

If you were over 20 years old, you will have to pay for adult upgrading. Generally, it costs $400-$800 per course. Vista Virtual offers adult upgrading or you can look at specific post-secondary institutions. Depending on the post-secondary, they may offer the high school course or they may have a “high school equivalent” that will not show up on your high school transcript but will show on your post-secondary transcript and can be transferred to a different institution. Bow Valley College in downtown Calgary offers high school courses, and you can also look at Chinook Learning Center in Calgary. MRU, SAIT, and U of C all have high school equivalent courses. Wherever you are looking to attend, Google “[school name] upgrading” and that is usually the fastest way to find their information.

If you are over 19 years of age and think you know the content in a course well enough to pass the diploma exam, you can challenge the diploma exam. A diploma challenge for an adult (over 19 years old) counts for 100% of the course mark. If you pass the diploma exam, that mark becomes your total/final course mark and is added to your high school transcript. To register for a diploma exam, you need to have a MyPass account with Alberta Education.
